Fifty years ago today, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring about the deleterious impacts that widespread and uncontrolled pesticide use in the U.S. was having on the environment. The publishing of the book was one of the pivotal moments in the development of the U.S. environmental movement and facilitated the U.S. ban of the pesticide DDT and further research into the disruptive effects of pesticides in the human body.
