As a grandparent and American citizen, I have concerns relative to the health and safety of my grandchildren being exposed to certain chemical pesticides.
For the many scientifically based reasons stated below, this concern applies to all children. I am part of group of concerned parents and grandparents who have formed a non for profit group called APP representing Advocating Precautionary Principle. Precautionary Principle is a behavioral approach which is characterized by minimizing potential hazards to children’s health, at the onset of an activity, rather than accepting a level of harm to children health.
I write to ask for the adoption of the Precautionary Principle resolution towards chemical use and to stop the use of pesticides on at least certain areas where children may congregate and play. Through our groups efforts in Sarasota County, Sarasota County Commissioners passed a Resolution advocating the Precautionary Principle be followed by all of its citizens using chemical controls when children are present. Sarasota County passed the Precautionary Principle Resolution after the commissioners were made aware of the publication of the 2010 Presidents Cancer Panel Study Report which discussed windows of vulnerability for children exposed to chemical pesticides, as well as the EPA Strategic Plan to screen 134 chemicals for endocrine disruption properties.
